Thanks for a great class everyone. Your drawings look great. Remember to hang your work for discussion-first thing-when you get to class ANDbring all your supplies excluding acrylic colors (still bring Black/White) and large sheets of Bristol.
****I am now including a label to the right called..NEWSNEWSNEWS....which will consolidate shows/exhibitions and other interesting tidbits*****
HOMEWORK(always due at the beginning of the next class)
*In-class explorations - BOTH Bristol#1 & #2.
*Linear Systems Assignment
*Bring a work of YOURS that reflects your current 2D work. Study your vocabulary (elements/principles/etc.) and be ready to answer the question: What elements and principles did you use and how?
*Before class: On the critique wall (to your right as you enter the room), hang your Linear Systems assignment above your two finished "Line Exploration" pieces that you began in class (start from left to right on the wall - leave room for your classmates). Hang the pieces (something like) my diagram below:
Finish In-class Explorations:
BRISTOL #1
1 & 2 = straight/geo.
2 & 3 = curved/organic
Cover/Let Dry:
1 & 3 = diluted ink (wash)
2 & 4 = diluted white acrylic (wash)
How much ink or acrylic? The diluted "veil" or layer of medium (ink or acrylic) will be approximately the same translucency as a sheet of vellum or tissue paper. You should be able to still see the drawing below. This layer will "even out" the drawing below - it will add a level of unity to your drawing by decreasing the contrast ratios (bringing the values closer to together by shortening the distance between the lightest light and the darkest dark).
*Let the layers or "veils" dry.
*Work back into you drawings:
MEDIA:
A) Black and white acrylic and all their grey mixtures in between or B) pen/brush/ink and a white pencil (not chalk). You can still use your pencil if you need to sketch out areas before the acrylic/ink.
METHOD:
1 & 2 = Work back into the drawings using opposite or complimentary line (curved/org).
3 & 4 = Work back into the drawings using opposite or complimentary line (straight/geo).
Further edit the composition. Remember your checklist of principles. Determine/define the lightest light/darkest dark, dominant/subordinate/accentual elements, and the fore/middle/background.
Bristol #2
Continue to use what you began in class as an exploration. Let the marks accumulate - org/geo., implied/actual, etc. Add washes of acrylic or ink if you need to add/subtract areas/forms/lines/etc. Remember the goal is not only to introduce you to pen/brush/ink but also to explore and expand you understanding of line and its connections to all the principles of design.
LINEAR SYSTEMS
As described in handout. I would encourage you to choose a horizontal orientation for your picture plane.
