::11-15::CRP: Overview::

OVERVIEW:
We are heading into the final stretch of the semester and into Final Project mode. You have all made some great progress throughout the semester...let's maintain the momentum and engagement and finish this semester with some well considered, crafted, and presented Final Projects. Next week we are working in class and talking about your CRPs (the progress made up to that point).
**The bottom of this post is the TIMELINE for your projects**

IN CLASS: COMBINATORIAL REALITIES PROJECT I
*CRP (Combinatorial Realities Project) Introduction
*Studio: Research and Prep for CRP

HOMEWORK:

Intro:
Throughout the semester we have been grappling with each individual element of 2D design (line, shape, texture, space, value, color). We then put these elements to work by incorporating them or putting them into the service of the principles of 2D design (balance, emphasis/dominance, rhythm/repetition, proportion/scale, unity/variety).

Furthermore, we have discussed the qualities and use of each element (pos/neg, geo/org., etc.) and principle (contrast, dominant/sub./accentual, foreground/back, continuation, grouping). We have learned that these qualities and uses affect not only their respective role in a 2D composition, but hopefully this understanding of quality and use will affect your decision making process in the act of creation.

We have transitioned from:

line to shape to objects in space

to
black and white to tone/valuetocolor and color strategies

to

flat/illusion/projection and depth of fieldOur investigations have led us through all different media including pencil, pen/wash, acrylic paint, photography, Photoshop (very briefly) and Illustrator.

The last few assignments of the semester have gotten us closer to bringing together all of the tools you have learned. For the CRP (final project) we step away from purely assignment based explorations/exercises to an extended project where the SUBJECT MATTER/CONTENT is up to you. It's your chance to follow your own path.

Overview:
The Final Project is called The Combinatorial Realities Project. This project is based on the assumption that as we have explored various methods of mark making and media, investigated a wide range of concepts throughout the semester, and in effect investigated a range of visual languages. Within the categories of elements and principles we have sets of constraints and rules.

Each assignment/exercise was created in order for you to gain some base level of conversational fluency in the qualities and use of the elements and principles as well as learning the specifics of working with different media.

Goal:

My goal for the CRP: Challenge you to mine your personal interests, create a personal inventory and then create 2 unique works that combine the 3 specific visual requirements listed below.

The CRP Project will be a multiple week, self defined, full color series of two pieces. Each of you will have the opportunity to choose subject matter, medium, and size. The only requirements are as follows:

*Support: Your choice of support or you can utilize the 18" x 24" bristol from the syllabus. Concerning size ...I am flexible (though no smaller than 18" x 24").
*Color: Full Color
*Media: Your Choice of Media - though you will be using multiple (remember the goal is to combine languages)
*Subject Matter: Your Choice of Subject Matter (hence you personal inventory list).
*Include 3 Elements:

PHOTOGRAPHY

PATTERN

MIXED MEDIA

UPDATE:
11/13 -- CRP Introductions, Discuss "3 Orders of Space"
Homework:  CRP conceptualization (interests, your major, visual influences, YOUR voice).  For the following week you should have solidified your concept, a rough material list (bring to class), and finished with all prep work (sketchbook, mock-ups, etc).  In summary, you should be prepared to work in class the following week- that means all materials and concept ready to go.
11/20 -- In class:  Studio. (begin CRP I). Individual discussions.
Homework:  Work on CRP I , come to next class after break with your first project finished and all prep work finished to begin CRP II.
11/27 -- THANKSGIVING BREAK!
12/04 -- In class:  Class (anonymous) critique for CRP I.  Studio.
Homework:  Finish all CRP Projects (I & II), organize portfolio for final (chronologically, label each assignment)
12/11 -- In class:  FINAL critique and hand in portfolio.
