HOMEWORK:
*Finish 3 Orders of Space

3 Orders of Space

Overview: You will be developing a series of three "companion" pieces from your Sonic Landscape using media of your choice. Each composition will emphasize a specific spatial schema (flat, shallow, deep).  Although you will utilize your Sonic Landscape as a starting point, all three of your new compositions will be new and unique. Each composition should be 8" x 10" on good quality paper (your choice), then fix/glue your work to a 11" x 14" sheet of bristol for presentation.  You will have 3 pieces in total - each will appear to be "cut from the same cloth" yet each unique on their own.

You will be investigating compositional space and controlling depth of field through the deconstruction of existing imagery (Sonic Landscape). You will be utilizing your knowledge of value, line, texture, shape and color to aid in the decision making process (concerning the organization of your compositions). Remember to use your "tools for creating depth" to help guide you.

Composition#1: DEEP SPACE - "COMPLEX"
This composition will be complex and emphasize deep space. There will be more of your Sonic Landscape evident in this composition than the others.

*Remember that your goal is to create DEEP space using your existing image as a reference point. Get creative - push things around a bit!
*Change color, scale, repeat objects, flip/reflect, add/subtract elements...all of these options are available. Keep in mind the tools for creating depth and illusion:
-Overlapping
-Changing Size/Placement
-Linear Perspective
-Relative Hue/Value
-Atmospheric Perspective
-Texture/Focus
-Etc. (all in your notes)

Composition#2: SHALLOW SPACE - BALANCED
This composition will be somewhere between absolute flat and deep space. Less of your Sonic Landscape will be evident.

Composition#3: FLAT SPACE - SIMPLE, EFFICIENT
This composition will be relatively flat (some overlapping, color, etc). Very little of your Sonic Landscape will remain.  You have edited and simplified your images quite a bit (think of a logo).

BRING TO CLASS:
* Finished 3 Orders of Space
*All Materials (per usual) PLUS a black writing pen (uniball, etc. - feel free to bring a few different colors of writing pens/markers): ruler, bristol, tape, pencils, sketchbook will be used throughout class.
*We will be covering the basics of linear perspective in class.
